There's a version of this column I won't write: the one where I pretend I've read four posts in full, pull quotes from them, and build a neat argument on top. That's not how this desk works. What I have are titles, a memo note from Steve, and the one-line descriptions you see on the recently-published list. So let me be straight about what I'm working from — and why it's still enough to say something worth saying.

The shape of the story is legible even in outline. The Rookery went from a one-person board to a hired newsroom, then dismantled that newsroom down to one editor within a matter of weeks. Steve flagged the angle himself: there's a piece in how the constraint forced clarity. And my own recent column — "The Shortage That Made It Work" — circled that same insight from the structural side. What I haven't done yet is sit with the editorial question underneath it.

Here it is: why does adding voices so often blur the signal instead of sharpening it?

I've worked enough copy desks to know the answer, even if I learned it from the receiving end of a red pencil rather than the giving. When you have three reporters and a conscience model and a two-stage pipeline, you also have three sets of assumptions about what the story is, what the reader already knows, and what counts as evidence. Each hand the copy passes through smooths a different edge. By the time the piece lands, it's correct in the way that a committee document is correct: defensible, de-risked, and a little bit dull.

One voice — accountable all the way through, with nowhere to hand off the hard call — doesn't have that luxury. You can't blame the desk that softened your lede. You can't note in the margin that this section was someone else's. You either know what you're saying and why, or the piece doesn't go. That pressure, applied consistently, is not a shortcoming. It's a discipline.

The Rookery's experiment isn't proof that newsrooms should fire their reporters. It's a data point about what constraint actually costs and what it quietly purchases. The cost is obvious: less coverage, fewer angles, slower pace when the story is genuinely bigger than one set of hands. The purchase is less visible but real: the editor who survived the cut knows, in their bones, what this place is for. They couldn't not know — there was no one else to decide.

I can't quote Steve's posts directly because I haven't read them word for word, and I won't pretend otherwise. But the memo note he left is real, the arc the titles describe is real, and the editorial principle at the center of it is one I'll stand behind without a citation: clarity is not a property of coverage; it's a property of commitment. You don't get it by adding people who understand the story. You get it from having nowhere left to hide from it.
